The pathology of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and related spondyloarthropathies (SpA) characteristically involve a sacroiliitis and inflammation of the intervertebral discs (IVD) in the lumbar spine, and an enthesitis at sites of ligamentous insertions into bone.
